American Tapestries – The Western Frontier

American Tapestries – The Western Frontier

Tapestries with a distinct Western theme make a log cabin or old style ranch house simply vibrate with authenticity. Using western themed tapestries as wall hangings in your home can bring a touch of the old West into your den or bedroom. You can cover large expanses of rough hewn natural walls, or accent plain pine or cedar paneling.

The Western style of tapestry can encompass many different designs and colors. The traditional burnt sienna, desert tan and earthy brown tones can mingle in a striped saddle blanket style, complete with thick bound edges. Alternately, a jagged stripe of white or deep indigo can work its way across more subtle tones for a sharp, edgy look.

Quieter tones of slate grey, black and dusky blue can bring a feeling of serenity and peacefulness into your home. This is the perfect look for the bedroom or study, to lend a calm air. Choose a softer edged pattern that is easy on the eye. Don’t waste such tapestry wall art above your headboard – hang it on the opposite wall so you can see it when you rise in the morning and lie down at night.

Brighter reds oranges and yellows can add a Tex-Mex flavor, especially if the tapestry is edged with fine tassels. Try hanging a small one in your kitchen for a little pick-me-up every time you walk in. If your kitchen is more modern looking, try a classic red, black and grey design. You can choose a different look for each room, or pick up a common thread throughout your house.

For those enamored of the Southwestern decorating scheme, traditional colors for tapestry wall hangings include turquoise, pale pink and purple or even a soft yellow. Try using a narrow tapestry vertically in the ‘wasted space’ between a doorway and a wall, and picking up the theme across the room with a larger horizontal piece. This emphasizes

Your existing style will have a lot to do with your choice of tapestry style. In some cases, basic patterns reminiscent of Native American weaves may be appropriate. Geometric designs form some of the most well known patterns; others feature birds or native wildlife. If you have a lot of natural wood furniture and favor earth tones in your fabrics and floor coverings, this could be a natural extension of your existing décor.

Choosing high quality tapestries is key when it comes to enhancing the beauty of your home. Authentic woven tapestry wall hangings may cost more than cheap imitations, but they will last longer and retain their look and feel. Many Western style tapestries are woven with thicker, handcrafted wool that gives almost a tufted effect, making them tactilely interesting as well as visually pleasing.

Tapestries are conversation pieces, so be prepared to give a history of the one you choose for your home! Learning the story behind the design used can be entertaining, and you can use your knowledge to impress visitors and add another dimension of history to your home. Whether the design is a unique frontier housewife’s creation or a traditional Navajo pattern, the back-story is sure to be interesting.

You can select a favorite room to dress up Southwest style, or develop a new house’s décor around a rustic theme. Pull the look together with gorgeous tapestry wall hangings, floor rugs and upholstered furniture. You can find pieces to match any color scheme you desire, and mix and match textures for a rich frontier setting. Use your imagination and cerate your very own version of what you think the Wild West looked like!

Whether you decide on handcrafted Navajo tapestries made of naturally dyed wool or more modern Americana style tapestry wall art, you can rest assured that the Western theme is timeless. You can implement a Southwest flavor in a house, apartment or weekend cabin getaway. All it takes is a few appropriate tapestry wall hangings worked into your existing decorating plan.

Best of all, if you change color schemes or styles at a later time, tapestries are incredibly versatile and easy to transport. You can move them to another room, use as an accent to give a dressing room extra warmth, or completely change the tone of a small study. Covering one wall with a large tapestry is a great way to add depth to a room.

Consider going back to basics and exploring the wealth of Western style tapestries available! You will be amazed at the color, texture and character a fine tapestry wall hanging can add to your home. A little innovation goes a long way, and you can add an authentic frontier flavor to your home.

Use Rawhide Lamp Shades For Western Decor

Use Rawhide Lamp Shades For Western Decor

Rawhide lamp shades add just the right western decorating touch you need for a rustic make over. For many people, western or southwest decorating is something that they love but don’t have an idea of how to bring into their own home. For some reason it seems like it is not possible to bring the old west home. Or perhaps the question is; where do I begin with rustic decorating?

In reality, adding rustic flavor to your home with rawhide lamp shades is easy, functional and doesn’t have to cost a fortune. With the introduction of just a few key elements any home can have the western ranch look, the rustic appeal of a cabin or the warm feel of a southwest pueblo style. Home decorating with rawhide lamp shades can make any room come alive with rustic cowboy style. You don’t even have to have every piece in place to begin a dramatic affect. Just add a few touches around your home as you can to create a great new look.

Rawhide lamp shades will set the focal points around the room and give you the foundation necessary to add other elements. Vintage lamps make a great statement but you can also us wrought iron lamps. If your budget allows, use antler lamps and chandeliers for one of the most classic looks in western lodge and home decor. You can also make your own lamps from drift wood or pottery. But, if you can’t add new lamps, chances are that rawhide shades will work with your existing lamps too. Lampshades made of stretched rawhide will really add to that cowboy feel even with traditional lamps. The most important thing is to keep the design functional.

Along with rustic lighting and the warm glow of rawhide lampshades around the room, add style and color with woven Indian style area rugs. If you already have hardwood floors, you will be well on your way to a great western feel. But a wooden floor while beautiful can have a cold empty feel. Using colorful hand woven wool rugs, table runners and place mats will warm the room and heighten the western theme. And if you have wall to wall carpeting, the wool southwest rugs will work perfectly to transform your decor. Be on the look out for Navajo rugs and weavings or at least reproductions of classic Native American patterns. Try some on the wall too as tapestries for a rich full look.

With rustic lamps, rawhide lamp shades and floor and walls adorned, look at the windows. If possible leave them uncovered. If you don’t already have rustic wood trimmed windows, try adding a rough wood plank across the top to give to affect of a wood beam like used in southwestern pueblos. If you have to use window treatments for privacy, try a wooden valance with simple straight panel curtains.

Finish with other rustic elements like wrought iron and wood accessories. Think about door knobs or cabinet and drawer pulls in western styles and some log furniture pieces. Other unique accessories will be stoneware and painted Indian pottery. And, one of the most basic techniques to add color and texture is to place a western throw blanket over the back of a chair or end of a couch. Rawhide lamp shades work especially well in the bedroom along with southwest bedspreads. Lay a cowhide down as a rug and your new western look will be complete.

Use Southwest Bedding To Create Unique Western Home Decor

Use Southwest Bedding To Create Unique Western Home Decor

Inexpensive southwest bedding is the way to go when it comes to decorating a rustic style home, cabin or lodge. A while ago, I was searching for an inexpensive way to redecorate one of the bedrooms in my home and give it a touch of the old west. I found some Indian blankets at a discount linen store and decided to add them as part of the western decor. I loved the country western style they created in the room so much that I decided to put them in all the rooms of my home to give them that beautiful, southwest style you see in designer magazines.

Since I used these southwestern blankets everyday as bedspreads, shawls, or as lap blankets, I started reading about the history of southwestern blankets and began researching their origin. The more I studied, the more intriguing the story became. I never knew that although very popular today with interior decorators and in modern style homes, southwest bedding for use in southwestern home decor actually grew in the early 1900′s, when Native American trade blankets were put on the market.

Most people I come in contact with, believe that the blankets and throws they commonly use for southwest bedding were originally made by Native Indians. I also believed that, until I began reading about the origin of these southwestern style blankets and discovered that, although American Indians were the main inspiration behind the designs and production of trade blankets, they were not the ones who made them.

In fact, as you research the intriguing history of western blankets, you will discover that they were actually made by machines, and produced by large weaving companies for the sole purpose of supplying the Indians with needed blankets. These rustic blankets were then supplied to the frontier trading posts where the Native Indians would buy and trade them and use them to wrap themselves in instead of a modern coat or jacket.

Something you will also find interesting as you study the history of trade blankets to use as southwest, is that as women became more interested in home decorating in the early 1900′s, southwest decor and western designs rose in popularity. These “Indian blankets” as they came to be called, were sought after by people across the nation who wanted them for southwest bedding and as decorative couch or chair covers to accent Native American home decor. The Indian trade blankets were wonderful for covering exposed legs when riding on a wagon, sleigh or buggy, and in the new horseless carriages. Later on, they were used as throws for camping, sporting events and a new hobby called motoring.

Now days, you can easily buy southwest bedding online and in stores that sell western and southwest home decor. Whether used as a western bedspread, blanket or bed throw, southwest bedding will add great character to your home and decor. If you are looking for authenticity and traditional American Indian values and are searching for a great way to enhance western style in your rustic home decor, then you will definitely love owning and decorating with southwest bedding.
