Bayeux Tapestry ? Hanging History in Your Home

The world famous Bayeux tapestry is quite appropriately housed and displayed at the “Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux” which unsurprisingly is a museum in the town of Bayeux situated in Normandy, North Western France.

Most people are aware that the tapestry itself depicts the build up to Norman Conquest of England and perhaps most famously, the Battle of Hastings in 1066. This is a piece of history that has always stayed with me since first learning it in junior school. Why is it, that this portion of history should be really prominent in my memory? I don’t know but I would hazard a guess that it has something to do with the vivid and brutal images of poor King Harold and that infamous arrow through his eye! How does one forget something like that?

A little bit of tapestry research later and I find that things got even worse for Harold as it’s thought that after the arrow in the eye that he was then hacked down by a Norman Horseman!

So, the Bayeux tapestry is not only one of the most well known pieces of decorative hanging wall art there has ever been but also one of the most dramatic and historical too! Despite the drama depicted throughout the tapestry it is also known as being one of the most colourful, vivid and decorative.

It’s not really a surprise that almost a thousand years later, art lovers and home owners are seeing fit to drape tapestries on their walls and the Bayeux tapestry is always popular. Of course for most homes it is a practical impossibility to have identical replicas of the tapestry because the original is more than 68 meters long! You would need some mighty hallway to fit that gigantic piece of textile art in!

Tapestries themselves and the history displayed upon them have enjoyed a remarkable return to popularity in recent years and a little bit of internet research will tell you that you can purchase them in many places with plenty of online stores dedicated to selling all things tapestry related.

So, if you fancy a bit of drama in your living room and you would rather not get it from the hundreds of soap operas and reality television shows, then why not consider a highly decorative, historical tapestry? If like me, you are fascinated by the story of not just the Norman Conquest but the making of the tapestry itself, then the Bayeux Tapestry would make a perfect choice.

Bayeux Tapestry: the Norman Conquest Immortalised

Bayeux Tapestry: the Norman Conquest Immortalised

One of the oldest and most unique tapestries in the world is the magnificent Bayeux Tapestry. It stretches to more than 70 metres long and depicts the story of the events leading to William the Conqueror’s invasion of England in 1066 and the Battle of Hastings. The tapestry is currently displayed in a purpose built museum in France.

The Bayeux Tapestry is not technically a tapestry but an intricate embroidery. Stitched in eight colours of woollen thread on linen it has survived for more than 900 years and is the only surviving relic detailing this significant historic event. Origins and aesthetics The exact origin of the Bayeux Tapestry has never been truly confirmed, however most of the historical evidence now points to Bishop Odo, the half brother of William the Conqueror, as the original commissioner of the masterpiece around 1070.

This intriguing work of art was displayed in the Cathedral of Bayeux for a further 700 years where it served as a way of depicting the story of the conquest to the illiterate and uneducated masses. Originally the embroidery was made from eight sections of linen which were then joined together. The stitching was worked in wool using couched work, stem, chain and split stitching. In sharp contrast to other examples of medieval embroidery the scenes stand out clearly against the linen and depict the events leading to the Norman Conquest and defeat of King Harold by William the Conqueror, and ends with the Battle of Hastings itself. Inspiring Napoleon The Bayeux Tapestry has served as an inspiration to Napoleon Bonaparte during his war against the English and he ordered the tapestry to be transported to Paris, apparently to motivate his planned attack on England which never occurred.

The tapestry returned unscathed to the people of Bayeux, not for the first time. During the French Revolution the masterpiece ended up as a wagon cover until, rather fortuitously it was recognised and returned. This led the citizens to form an arts council to protect the work. Northern France was devastated during both World Wars and the tapestry found itself hidden away during that time. It is now on display in Bayeux. The town of Bayeux was one of the first to be liberated during the Second World War by the Allies. Rather poignantly, the war cemetery at Bayeux has an inscription on the memorial to allied forces in Latin which translates as, “We the descendents of the people conquered by William, liberated his homeland.

The story within the tapestry

On the surface the tapestry depicts a historical event. Looking in depth at the characters, the armour and the expressions, one sees much more. Each scene is a work of art in itself and could stand alone as a story in isolation. The work has a timeless appeal to generations, probably explained by hidden meanings, and the character woven into the fabric itself. In one scene as William sets out for battle the tapestry appears to give an impression of gathering momentum as horses charge across the linen, an anticipation of the devastating events to come. The violence of war is evident in the depictions of fallen soldiers, horses, weaponry and the expressions on the faces.

In another scene great detail is placed on the shipping, some decorative, others with emblems and mast heads, all adding to the preparation of and anticipation of events to come. A captivating work of art The Bayeux Tapestry has timelessly appealed to people for hundreds of years and has relayed a tale of a momentous battle and conquest to generations. On the one hand the brutality of war and humanity is displayed, on the other the artistic appeal of the masterpiece itself.

Yet again there are still many unanswered questions about this work of tapestry art that will continue to intrigue and fascinate for many years to come.

The Bayeux Tapestry – Controversy Rages on

The Bayeux Tapestry – Controversy Rages on

The practice of reproducing tapestry art for use in the home is becoming more popular by the year. The versatility of tapestry lends itself easily to use for a more substantial version of masterpieces. Among the many reproductions of famous artwork sometimes seen in living rooms are scenes from a work known as the Bayeux Tapestry.

The Bayeux Tapestry has been the source of much controversy over the centuries since the Norman Conquest. Strictly speaking, it’s not a tapestry at all, but a series of embroidered panels stretching some 230 feet in length. It has long been held up as one of the most authentic historic accountings of William the Conqueror’s invasion of Britain.

There is enough muddle over its commission, origin and authenticity to spur vigorous debate at many a dinner party or soiree. Portions of the ‘tapestry’ are well known enough to be easily recognizable, and the events that took place are clearly depicted. How accurate the portrayal is has oft been brought into question, however.

The Tapestry’s Origin

The commission of the tapestry has alternately been assigned to various parties. Some attribute it to William’s devoted wife Mathilde, who was said to have stitched it with her ladies in waiting. They point to one Aethelflaed, widow of Byrhtnoth, Earl of Essex who died in the Battle of Malden in 991. Aethelflaed commissioned a tapestry of her husband’s last stand in honor of Byrhtnoth, and presented it to the Ely Cathedral.

A more plausible explanation perhaps is that William’s half-brother, the Bishop Odo of Bayeux, directed that the tapestry be embroidered in England by Saxon nuns. Others maintain the work was done in Winchester itself. Certainly the tapestry is of the right length to surround the nave of the Bayeux Cathedral, and the stitching is comparable to premier English needle workers of the time.

The tapestry itself has several prominent scenes which have been reproduced for home interior use. Harold’s preparations for the invasion is one, the launching of William’s fleet to set sail for Britain and his subsequent landing comprise two more. The Battle of Hastings which concludes the existing tapestry is particularly favored as a reproduction.

Historical Accuracy In Doubt

Still more debate rages over the actual historical value of the tapestry, seeing as how it was commissioned by the victors and understandably can be expected to be slanted hard in their favor. There is no solid description of the Norman conquest from the invaded countrymen’s point of view, and nearly all of the information we have of the event is gleaned from the tapestry itself.

The Normans maintain that William had received an oath of support from Harold, brother-in-law of Edward the Confessor, after William had rescued Harold from shipwreck. When Harold ascended to the throne of England upon Edward’s death, William invaded citing Harold’s breach of faith as the reason.

Historians differ in their acceptance of this version of events. The only collaboration of Harold’s oath ever occurring is in a Norman account dating a full ten years after the invasion. This naturally falls under the same suspicion as it is likely the Normans would paint themselves in the best possible light despite the real facts of the matter.

Be that as it may, the panels showing Harold swearing allegiance and later being killed are among some of the most well known panels. The controversy lingers – The panel showing the Prince’s death holds some ambiguity as to how he actually died. Tradition holds that it was an arrow through the eye that took him out, but the embroidered words on the tapestry are ambiguous both in context and placement.

Tapestry Still Worth Consideration

Some things in the tapestry ring undeniably true; the appearance of Halley’s comet is chronologically correct, and the castles of the time are depicted inside and out with what seems to be reasonable accuracy based on excavations of similar sites. It is likely that there is as much truth as propaganda in the tapestry as a whole, much like many other historic documents written from one side’s point of view.

When looking at the panels available as reproductions, you should decide which portion of the story you wish to concentrate on. Most of the research concerning the Norman conquest is based on the tapestry itself, so don’t expect to find much more than general suppositions. One thing you can count on is for the controversy to continue. Whatever the panel or panels you choose for your home, you can rest assured your selected portion of the Bayeux Tapestry will quickly become a conversation piece and a valuable, interesting addition to your home.

Ageless Beauty For Your Home Decorating Needs – Bayeux Tapestries

Ageless Beauty For Your Home Decorating Needs – Bayeux Tapestries

To truly understand the popularity of the Bayeux Tapestry, one has to learn its story, the history of Europe embroidered in vivid color, the story of blood, hatred, conquest and victory.

To make a very long story short, Bayeux Tapestry is a medieval embroidered cloth, almost 231 feet long, depicting the Norman Conquest of England.  Embroidered in woollen threads of eight colours on linen cloth, this famous piece of art consists of 79 scenes. It was probably created in 11th century, soon after the Battle of Hastings and the Norman’s conquest of England.

There are many versions of the story, depending who tells it. The romantic version says that the Bayeux Tapestry was woven by the wife of King William, Queen  Mathilde, but the historians believe that it was most probably ordered by Odo, bishop of Bayeux, and created in England by a team of seamstresses. The tapestry hung for centuries in the cathedral in Bayeux (Normandy) and now hangs in the special museum in the cathedral.

Bayeux Tapestries, the way we know them today, are true tapestries, woven on jacquard loom, depicting one of 79 scenes from the original wall art. The timeless beauty of the original tapestry offers itself very well to a modern wall art form. Each scene is recreated as a unique piece of art and often decorated with a border and hanging rod. The colors are exquisite, with muted, earth colors giving a sense of centuries passed.

Bayeux Tapestries can play a very important role in a decorating style of a room. The historical subject and natural colors help in deciding where to place your new tapestry. To really showcase their beauty, they should given sufficient space and should not be crowded with other decorative elements. The spotlight should illuminate it while you or your guests are in the room, but great care should be taken to preserve the colors from too much light, wether natural or artificial.

The best rooms to show your Bayeux Tapestry are, of course, a living room, and a study or a library. Placing the tapestry in the living room would allow you to show it to its full potential, but the library, with heavy leather furniture and soft, rich woods, would be just the perfect setting for your own piece of history.

There is a whole range manufacturers and dealers selling Bayeux Tapestries. If you are choosing your piece online, make sure that you check the source. The reputation of the manufacturer and the reliability of the online source are as important as with any purchase, but you are buying a piece of art and its quality is even more important.

Only the most reputable manufacturers like Tapestry Galery can guarantee the quality of the product and can provide the information about your tapestry and the appropriate hanging rod. All their Bayeux Tapestries are produced for them in France by experienced weavers.
