Setting Your Christmas Dinner Table

Setting Your Christmas Dinner Table

Nothing says Christmas dinner like a table set with holiday dishes and decorations. Whether you have a traditional Christmas roast turkey, beef, ham, or vegan specialties, you will want your family and friends to feel that holiday spirit when they sit down to their meal. Maybe you eat early in the afternoon and nibble on leftovers and treats the rest of the day. Maybe you have a formal seated dinner in the evening of Christmas day. Maybe your most festive or traditional meal is on Christmas Eve in the early evening or after midnight mass. In any case you will want to set a pretty and holiday-themed table.

You may want to look at those holiday dishes and decorations you already own first. Most people are delighted to see something new on the table, but for some it will not feel as merry without some of the traditions that have been observed in past years. Did Grandma pass on to you that special meat platter, salt and pepper shakers, or candlesticks? Even when you dress up your table with some things that are new, there are still some old, delightful things that can be present.

After deciding what you will keep, plan, at least generally, for the menu. Does this seem premature? If you are not serving salad or soup, for instance, there is no point to buying a holiday dishes set that has bowls. Also consider how you like your meal to be served. Do you prefer buffet serving with all the serving dishes off to the side? Or do you envision your family seated at the table for the duration of the meal with all your side dishes being passed at the table? A table full of dishes of food does not have as much room for table decorations down the entire length of the table. A smaller centerpiece will suffice, or have decorations at each place setting in the form of dinnerware, place mats, napkins, napkin rings, etc.

Consider also a color scheme for your table. Red, green and metallic golds and silvers are always traditional and in good taste. Also consider a more contemporary setting like white with accents of blue or lavender. These colors can be incorporated in the dinner plates, table cloth, napkins, runners, candles, foliage, beads, ribbons, garlands and more. Also incorporate color in the planning of your meal. Having a green vegetable is pleasing to the eye and nutritious as well. Be cautious of having too many white and brown foods like turkey, mashed potatoes and white rolls, which make a boring presentation. The holidays are a great time to have some bright colors on the plate in the form of sweet potatoes or a berry of some form: cranberries, raspberries, blueberries. Think of some fresh flavors for the palette and not just the traditional starchy ones. As you did with your holiday dishware and decorations, serve some of the traditional recipes for your family, and brighten things up with at least one new recipe every year.

The Christmas dinner is a composition piece. Most people think first and foremost of the food, but it would not be as much fun if it were not for the special holiday dishware, the table linens, the centerpiece and everything decorative that reminds us of the yuletide season. Take the bride’s old maxim of combining something old, something new, something borrowed, and if you wish, even something blue.

It should take a little time to find the right bed linen because it needs to go well with your other bedroom furniture if a successful interior design is to accomplished.

Home Furnishing Exporters sitting on a goldmine!

Home Furnishing Exporters sitting on a goldmine!

The other day on my way to home, I was confronted with a huge billboard, boasting of the first ever 50% sale, from one of the major players in the home furnishing industry in India. Though I had no plan to buy anything, still the curiosity bug got better of me and I decided to check in, to see what was there on the offer.

The rugs, curtains, towels, cushion covers, bed items, duvat covers, shams, quilts, coverlets, euro shams, pillow, bed skirts, bolsters, neck rests etc. was all made to look very attractive, in an effort to woo a buyer’s impulse purchase vein. However, even after the the so called sale , it was still, steeply priced , which wasn’t surprising ;-)

One interesting trend which I observed, was the invasion of technology and innovation in the home furnishing industry. The products on display were more durable, more stylish, more appealing by blending the latest technology features along with the comfort requirement. Another trend which caught my imagination was the extensive use of Natural fibres which could be because of the renewed interest in eco-friendliness and sustainability .

The Home Furnishings Industry in India offers a range of highly sought after products like bedspreads, furnishing fabrics, curtains, rugs, durries, carpets, placemats, cushion covers, table covers, linen, kitchen accessories, made-ups, bed spreads, bath linen etc. Home Furnishings manufacturers in India are creating their own niche and don’t shy away from testing the foreign waters for their business expansion needs.

Indian home furnishing industry is also influenced by traditional motifs and design, though they keep experimenting with western elements like the use of lace, minimalism etc. Such designs are of great interest to the new age customers resulting in higher sales to the end supplier.

Today, the home furnishing industry in India is a force to reckon with. Years of experience, skilled labour, state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment etc. has become a trademark for India’s home furnishing industry in the western arena.

Home furnishing exporters are well aware of the fact that the Indian products are a big rage all over the world and they are not leaving any stone unturned to cash on this opportunity. The industry analysts, as expected, are quite gung-ho about the home furnishing exporters, next quarter’s profit statement.

Tapestries Bring Life To The Room

Tapestries Bring Life To The Room

Tapestries have been a part of the history of decoration all the way to the years of the B.C. era where they adorned the walls of castles and empires of those in power. The works of art are rich in history and have progressed throughout the ages to become a corner stone of every different era of enlightenment. With the onset of the fifteenth century, many European nations began to take hold of the production of this particular art and during this time the world would see some of the most vibrant and intricate forms of wall hangings that human kind has ever seen. Along with their exotic weaves, some of the more formal works contained strands of gold filament woven into their canvas, making them valuable beyond simply personal means.

Mass Production Means More Availability

During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the countries of Europe began to see a textile industrial revolution in the form of factories where cloth and other textiles were produced in mass quantities. It was during this time that tapestries became not only an item for the rich and powerful, but other classes of people were able to enjoy the work of art as well. Although during this time these pieces were being produced in mass numbers, many still chose to hand weave their works and these customized or hand crafted forms of art would begin timeless in their value to history.

However, it was at this time that the tapestry became available to all and many of modest means were able to afford the items of art traditionally only available to those of wealth and upper class status. People of varying class status began to afford some types of home décor.

Now Commonplace Throughout The World

With most nations in the world experiencing the technological revolution, things such as textiles and other forms of art have taken on whole new form of availability. Of the present, many people are using tapestries to adorn the walls of their homes and offices, using many different styles that they have to choose from in all corners of the globe. For instance, one who lives in a state such as Arizona or New Mexico will have access to hand crafted tapestries that depict the colors and landscapes of the southwestern deserts. However, these same works can be found in places such as Western Europe as well due to the fact that people have varying styles and tastes as well as shipping becoming trans global.

How Expensive Are Tapestries

Tapestries can come in many different shapes and sizes and the price of one work over the other simply depends on what type of materials were used and whether it was mass produced or hand crafted. As a general rule, hand crafted and customized works are much more expensive but also have a greater monetary value and well as emotional sentiment. Basically, it comes down to the individual and how much he or she wishes to spend on their particular purchase.

Tramping along the Himalayan Trails?

Tramping along the Himalayan Trails?

Hills and mountains always have their own charm and no matter how much time elapse in a hill station, the virgin serenity of nature always feels different in different hill stations. Snow roofed mountains, green woods, wild fountains, wooden houses and purity in the atmosphere- there may be innumerable common factors but a hill station never fails us as each of them has to offer something special. Gangtok was our newest discovery in the Indian travel map and we immediately embarked on a journey to unfurl this amazing hill station.

A delayed train journey from Delhi took us forty hours to reach New Jalpaiguri, a major town in West Bengal (being the nearest railway station to some of the amazing tourist destinations in the region). Big hoarding displaying Bangla alphabets welcomed us as we drove past the town till we entered the state of Sikkim. Then, a mere 125 kilometer bumpy bus ride and we found us amidst a cloudy hilltop.

No we didn’t go for immediate sightseeing! It was our lovely hotel built on the slopes of a rocky hill. As our vision descended on the capital city of Sikkim, it felt like as if someone had just torn out a beautiful page from a picture-story book. The thick blanket of fog kissed our cheeks and the prayer flags fluttering in the breeze at a distant corner looked magical. The journey so far was tiring but we finally won the battle with our exhaustion and decided to explore the place in a nice coffee house to start with.

The bitter winter part was almost over and the sunny atmosphere had rouged the faces around. A positive vibe swept us and we instantly liked this new infection. Bending over a steaming cup of coffee we debated on our plans and finally, zeroed on the Deer Park, also called the Rustomji Park, the park near the New Secretariat.

The park houses the famous red panda and the Himalayan Bear. A big statue of Lord Buddha in the Deer Park embellishes the park premises. A butter lamp perpetually burning in front of the statue, which is surrounded with flowers of exotic variety, was simply mind-blowing. The trip was quick and worth trying. So worth was our next take, the Rumtek Monastry situated amidst some eye-soothing greenery.

The monastery, 24 kms from Gangtok, originally called the Dharma Chakra Centre, comprises of a beautiful shrine temple and a monastery for the monks. Again the religious colorful flags produced a perfect unfathomable setting. Away from the city madness, this place felt heavenly. The feel of the cold metallic wheels at the monastery to our fingers sent in a spiritual shudder and we wondered if we could stay back forever.

However, the increasing number of tourists threatened the tranquility of the place and we left it in a hurry lest our impression changed. On the way back, we couldn’t help admiring the beauty of the pagoda like houses that gives the city a unique touch. The monks climbing the hilly roads in their religious attire waved at us and like some school kids we waved back too.

While in Gangtok, one thing that impressed us the most was the well maintained roads. Our guide told us that roads in Sikkim are maintained by the Boarder Road Organization (BRO), a wing of the Indian Army. Since the state faces China Border, the logic behind this seemed acceptable.

Later in the evening, we went to M G Marg that houses a stream of shops, pubs and restaurants and tourists throng in numbers to enjoy local cuisines, attires, mementoes or just to enjoy the ambiance. But, we simply knocked into the famous Dragon Restaurant at M G Marg for some much talked about Chinese delicacies. We ate as if it was our one last wish, only to find an extensive complimentary buffet laid for us at the hotel!

A nice hair massage at a roadside salon was necessary after we shopped till we got some sore feet, although the prices were unreasonable. We didn’t mind the indifferent shopkeepers for those truly fashionable items. Passion fruit Squash, Alpine Cheese, Temi Tea & Maha Gurudev Tea are some of the local products that we shoved into our collection bag. Chinese products including food items like canned fish and mushrooms are must buys in as they are not available in other parts of the country. The number of local liquor shops surprised us but our jaws dropped when someone actually bought a bottle of local red wine just for 70 rupees! And let us reveal one more thing- we didn’t see a single beggar to our relief!

Next day, we went to the Khangchendzonga National Park, one of the highest national parks in the world which covers the world’s third highest mountain range Kanchenjunga. The biodiversity in the park was worth some research but we preferred to dote on something else. The snow-clad Kanchenjunga peak shimmered in morning splendor and we in a minute discovered the uniqueness of Gangtok- the land of lofty mountains!

The rest of the day was spent in different local attractions such as Namgyal Institute of Tibetology (Museum) at Deorali, Tasuklakhang – The Royal Chapel, the Peace Pagoda, and the White Hall( built in 1932 in memory of the first political officer of Sikkim, Claude White).

But one thing we highly recommend to our readers is the ropeways or cable car located at Deorali market. The cable car stops at the middle point to give you a spectacular view of the valley and if you believe us the time comes to a halt as you float in the air. It was scary at the same time to hang between life and death! But safety measures are well advanced. So, back from the heaven’s door, we decided to wolf down some hot momos at the Shanti View Point as we had heard that momos are the most delicious offering from Sikkim. The day ended with a picnic by the Banjhakri Falls, a lovely waterfall, surrounded by gardens and stairwells. We returned cold but content. A new day awaited us when we were to experience some breathtaking events.

Some impatient moments at the transport office to acquire tourists passes and we set on to explore the Nathu La pass on the Indo-Chinese border that serves as a trade link between the two countries.

Known as the Silk Route (56 kms from Gangtok) , Nathula Pass at 14,450 feet altitude once had been the main access for Sikkim -Tibet Trade. All we could see was a bedspread of white snow stretched into infinity. The heavy snow fall made it difficult to proceed but we dared to go further to Tsomgo Lake, Sikkim’s vital tourist attraction. The lake was in a frozen state and we didn’t get a chance to enjoy the wild flowers by the lake that blooms in summer. But, the small temple of Lord Shiva built near the lake side and the walkways around the lake made it worth visiting.

Visibility was too low and we encountered breathing problem. A few faint cases in our team and we landed up at the Indian army base hospital. Entry to this restricted zone was thrilling but we dreaded the shoddy weather as time ticked. Medicines, a steaming hot meal and a lift back to the city –they offered everything. The thought of their surviving in that bitter cold and fighting for the safety of the nation amazed us. In return, all we could do was to salute their willpower to survive such a hard life.

Silence and tiredness had crept in the ride back to our hotel. It was our last night at Gangtok. We wanted to go river rafting on river Teesta as rafters swear by the challenges. However, the best time to do this is from May to October. An early April rafting wasn’t a safe bet. Still, we had one more thing left -without that the trip would have been incomplete. So before leaving the city we made a quick trip to Jawaharlal Nehru Botanical Garden with our luggage loaded into our taxi.

The garden is maintained by the parks and Gardens unit of the Forest Department of the Government of Sikkim. The lush green vegetation, rare plants and trees and certain species of Himalayan flowers and Orchids preserved in a huge greenhouse within the garden can undoubtedly hypnotize nature lovers. Wild orchids in every possible color stole our heart right way. ‘Bisleri bottles pierced in style to make fountains’ was one innovative idea that we liked about this place.

So the visit was over and our taxi gyrated through the hilly roads. Tranquility, mysticism and poise – this short trip offered all. Nobody dared to disagree this time. Hope we return to this land someday and find it the same-serene yet effervescent. Like we said before, a hill station never fails anyone.

Provencal Fabrics ? A Great Choice for Your Household Linens

Provencal Fabrics ? A Great Choice for Your Household Linens

Provencal fabrics come from Provence, in southeastern France on the Mediterranean. Currently available worldwide, these fabrics make a practical and beautiful choice while being easy to care for.  Provençal fabrics have their beginnings in the 17th century when a company in France imported Indian linen. This came in very bright colors and patterns and was called “Indiennes”. They quickly gained in popularity and were used to make dresses and house linens. Subsequently, local manufacturers began to produce Provençal fabric, including French designs.

The Process Of Production

The making of Provencal fabric involves an elaborate process. The first step is whitening the linen. The patterns are then sketched with stencils. Bright colors, made from natural plant dyes, are used to color these patterns. When completed, the cloth was washed and dried. Gradually, the production techniques were modernized, but the original colors and patterns have been maintained.

The markets of Provence have an extensive collection of Provençal table linens and fabric. Specifically in Provence, the ancient technique is still used to make the fabric. They are either hand printed or printed using brass rollers based on craftsmen’s drawings.

Reputed companies in the U.S. such as Amelie Michel now bring you this precious fabric in the form of house linens, inspired by the ancient printed cotton, yet seamlessly adapted to present preferences. The cloth is bright, lively and fresh, bringing in a bit of Provence into the buyers’ home.

Provence is popular for its olive trees, lavender fields, poppies, sunflowers, cicadas and rosemary. The area has many ancient villages in naturally beautiful settings steeped in history and culture. The work of some of the world’s greatest artists such as Picasso, Cézanne and Renoir are reputed to have been inspired by Provence.

The best part of Provençal fabrics is their durability and color fastness. They look good through several washes and do not need to be ironed. They are also resistant to stain. They are ideal for use both indoors and outdoors, allowing you to enjoy a barbeque without having to worry about getting your tablecloths clean again. The jacquard cotton poly weaves from the old French mills are good quality and easy to care for. Available in a variety of sizes, colors and prints, these traditional French tablecloths drape well and look and feel great.

Provençal fabrics or French made fabrics bring warmth to your home with their cheery bright colors and patterns. The table cloths, napkins, bedding and runners made from these fabrics are very easy to maintain and look new through years of use.
